I'm looking for a 10 horse for a fishing boat. Of all the manufacturers which 9-8 -10 is the fastest most powerful. Have there been any online comparisons?
I'd prefer a 4 stroke.

Thanks

Henry

They're all pretty much the same, but two stokes are faster on take off.

Now if you were thinking of a two stroke 15 (generally same size as the 9.9 two stroke), now your talking about a good 5-7 miles an hour faster.

Could get a ~80's vintage Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 and replace its carb with a 15hp carb thus making a 15hp, or so people claim.
I see people selling those carbs claiming that on Ebay often.
Not sure of the exact years either but they were made for quite a while.

Well, it depends.

9.9 Clydesdales are a lot more powerful than 9.9 Thoroughbreds but the Thoroughbreds are a lot faster.

You can try every 9.9 on the market, 2 or 4 stroke, and the correct rigging and prop will make more difference than the brand/model of engine.

Cobra must be talking about a racing shingle to get 5-7 mph more with a 15.

The 9.9 and 15 hp engines built on the same block differ a lot more than just a carb. Putting one big link in a chain does not make a stronger chain.

The fastest 10 horse is the one that you can set on 11 (lame joke - have you seen "this is spinal tap"?).

JB, I guess it's kind of a shingle...a 130lb 13.5 ft. aluminum boat. With two kids and myself 25mph. Alone 2-3 mph faster depending on the size of the boater.

Yes, Cobra.

If a boat/load falls just where a 9.9 wont fully plane it and a 15 will there will be a large difference in WOT speed.

My point is that the OMC pair, at least, have only the smallest difference in torque at any given rpm except top end, where the 15 continues to rev and the 9.9 flattens out. That, of course, only happens when the load allows the higher revs.

a 2 stroke will perform better than a 4stroke
difference in top speed will be small if any
go with the manufacture ie merc johnson that can give you the best service

The strongest 9.9s are the ones that have been converted to 15s on the sly. ;)

Not that I'm condoning that sort of behavior.

Look for the versions that have the same displacement as the 15s. Some have the same displacement as the 8s. You want cubes!
