Every since the start of this boating season I've been wanting to make a trip out to Mosquito Lake. Everything I read about it, sounds like a really nice alternative to Lake Erie which can get pretty ruff pretty fast this time of year with the winds out of the north. Today we were sidelined with 5-7 footers and a small craft adviser. It looks like it's going to be about 1 hour and 45 minute drive for me (not bad considering the outcome).

My question is, has anyone here had any resent experiences at this lake or any other lakes in the northern part of Ohio? We are hoping to make a trip after the Labor Day weekend (as we will be camping all weekend). Thanks.

mosquito, berlin, milton, and west branch are all decent inland lakes in that area

Well in my personal experience Mosquito is a good lake....but only about 3 months a year....and those months are not named June, July or August. In the 3 best months of summer the fishing is rather rough and it can get quite crowded on the weekends with PWC, skiers and tubers. Now I enjoy all of the above but when you got so many people around it can make things difficult. Plus the hydra's are about 8-10 feet tall under the water. The only fish hitting out there right now are Largemouth, usually in the early morning and late evening. In the spring thru about the 1st week of June the Walleye bite is awesome. In the fall usually following Labor day it's great again. The lake is usually fairly calm, but big storms seem to hit it pretty frequently. The campgrounds on the lake aren't too bad with good facilities and easy access to a dock, but I am not sure about weekend docking and such.

I am from the Youngstown area so I frequent Mosquito, Berlin, Milton, and Pymatuning, with the occasional trip to West Branch.

West Branch is OK. A bit small for me but it depends on what you want to do. We like Salt Fork or Tappan but that might be too far south for you.

Salt Fork is where we go when my wife wants to go camping, the prob with SF is that its a narrow lake and if your not in a no wake zone, skiiers and tubers come right up on to of you, thats the worst lake for that. But Mosquito, berlin, milton, & wb are good Lake Erie alternatives with in an hr or so of most ne ohio. Plus if your into trolling, Wilson & Olcott, Ny are only about 3 hrs away on Lake Ontario, its pretty good in spring and fall.
