Hello to all, I'm still learning....
Thanks to this forum I have gained a lot of great info!
I am working on a 1988 volvo-penta AQ 131D with the SP-A outdrive. I have a decent amount of skill, and I am wanting to replace the u-joints on this unit. I have the sterndrive removed, and I have the u-joint shaft and bearing housing/plate removed. If I remove the bolt that holds the gear to the shaft, am I disrupting the bearing load. This bearing looks and feels fine from what I can see and am not planning on replacing it unless absoulutely neccessary. Can I simply unbolt the gear, pull the shaft, replace the u-joints and torque the bolt back to 90ft lbs. I have a clymers manual and they show a string wrapped around the gear and pulling on it to measure preload on the bearing, is this necessary using the old bearing?? Hope this sounds clear enough, sorry to ramble and truly appreciate any advice and help I receive.
I've attatched pictures of what I am working on.

Another question I have is the oil in the drive smelled like gear oil, I've read in posts from DonS that most of the volvo's are using 30W engine oil. What about the SP-A, is the 30W the correct oil now.
Thanks again for your time and help.

Re: More Volvo questions

I was able to remove and replace the u-joints on my 290DP drive without having to take the yoke out of the clamping ring housing. I did not even separate that clamping ring from the top housing. Kind of cumbersome, and it was close but there was enough room. There are a couple of indentations around the inside ring that made it possible to gain clearance for the ujoint closest to the housing. I used a lot of liquid wrench to loosen it all up, and a big clamp, hammer, and a socket that just fit the u-joint cups and had them out and the new ones in place in an hour or so.

Re: More Volvo questions

thanks mac and don for your response. Mac you got lucky cause on my SP-A that inner joint is REALLY close to the housing clamp with no notches.

Don S thank you VERY much for the link to the PDF. you have been a great help and are a wealth of knowledge, thanks again.
