More volvo questions from me!

Probably some easy ones.

1. What am I doing wrong running it on muffs? with the drive off and water in the hose coming through the transom, it sucked up water just fine. With the muffs on the lower unit, I have no water coming out the exhaust? Either I'm doing something wrong, or there's a problem with the drive right?

2. The manual says that the outdrive takes 2.2L of gear oil. So this should not spill out the vent hole right? I put about 2.5 quarts plus a little that was in the lower already and it puts it the very middle of the dipstick on the vent screw. This sound right?

1. Make sure hole is plugged at bottom of drive, When I run on muffs, it seems to take 10-15 seconds or so before water starts coming out. It usually starts at the idle releifs and then out the exhaust.

2. According to Don S, it varies between 2.25 and 2.75 QT. So sounds like your good.

Well, I duct taped over that hole a few times to make sure it was sealed and ran it again, and I still don't have water coming out.

I read the post that was up today about him not getting water through the drive. But I know from the inlet hose back is good cause it sucked before I put the drive on.

So, its gotta be from the water neck down. and I put the waterneck on with gasket and it went tight, so that should be okay.

Is there anything else I can check?

well I've been through and checked at what I can check and really don't see any problems. And my hose isn't kinked.

Is it possible my muffs jsut aren't good enough? Not tight enough?

it is a small possibility that the water pressure in hose is not enough to push water thru the system. water has to climb upwards into motor, circulate and fill up in block and manifolds and climb a bit more thru the risers before it exits the exhaust. if there is not enough pressure to do this, it will simply spray out the sides of the muffs.

You may want to backflush from the raw water pump to make sure its not clogged. Those pumps suck pretty strong, once water is in the intake at the drive it should suck it through, as long as it's not sucking air.

Stick the drive in a tub of water and see if it picks up. Lots of times a hose doesn't work for either low water pressure, too long a hose, of too small a diameter. Just make sure the water is over ALL the water pickup openings. If not, it will not work.
