1994 3.0 L Alpha one Gen 2. Recently bought a boat that is in pretty decent shape but the trim gauge is not working. I’ve searched past threads on this and other forums and have a fair understanding of the operation. All components appear to be good. The sender was replaced at some point. It was full of grease but has been cleaned. The contact strips and rheostat are good. The wires are visually good, at least those in the harness that comes attached to the sender. The back of the gauge is not corroded. There is current to the back of the gauge with key on. The gauge is pegged at full up, actually off the scale.

Can anyone one provide a test sequence and desired readings for the system. I don’t mind replacing components but would rather diagnose with a volt meter than by throwing parts at it.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to both of you. I get readings in that range but there are also gaps and the readings change. I’m going to get a new sender and try it first without changing the wires. Back soon.

FYI -- I have seen people use crimp terminal, add grease or corrosion inhibitors and heat shrink those wires to get some added run time without pulling the drive.

Its not the best long term fix but will last a few years in freshwater if needed. That in turn can allow time for a proper fix on the next bellows change.

An update to this issue, I bought a new trim sender that is only sold as a kit along with the trim limit switch. Just before installing I did a few final checks based on the 10 to 170 Ohm good reading at the sender. My readings were very close at the sender terminal so I repeated the test at the harness wire ends in the engine bay. No continuity! After much testing and head scratching it turns out that the plug connector in the boat harness was broken. Install new connector, adjust sender, gauge reads! The kit goes b ack tomorrow for refund. Thanks for the help.

Ayuh,..... What's a Trim Gauge,..??

Strange gauge used by 'newbie' boaters before they learn to 'fly by the seat of their pants'.... :D :D :D :D

What Bondo means, is that you trim not by a gauge, but by feel. You trim the drive UP or DOWN to get the most comfortable ride for the given conditions and speed. Too many people launch their boat, stick the drive in one position and just leave it there all day. Once you get a feel for it, you'll be on the trim button as much as the throttle lever. I know I am. :) The change to how a boat rides in chop with some subtle use of the trim is quite remarkable.
