When I bought the brand new Chaparral 186 SSI with the 5.0L 220 hp engine. It was O K at 50 mph GPS and 4900 rpm rev limiter. Just me in it..........BUTT.......... It had several dangerous driving conditions as delivered.
Blow out completely if floored from any speed between 0 and 30 mph...........if turned rapidly left or right it blew out everytime........ at WOT and speed the boat was beyond a safe condition. It was doing a2 second waddle left and right constantly. Trim only reduced top speed.
I almost killed a person that popped up in front of me. He had no boat or dive flag nearby. I cut the wheel sharply left and lost sight of him as I went by. Scarry
I then called the Prop Gods for advice. Spoke with Ken about terrible handling of the boat and blowouts. I was pleased with Ken's advice about Power Tech Props.
Called Powertech & asked for Technical Support. I was very lucky who spoke to me. I told him my problems about stability and blow outs. I said I did not care how much speed I had to give up. To have a boat that could NEVER lose control. No matter what I did. With any combination of the throttle and steering at ANY SPEED. He asked if I would be satisfied with 47 mph at WOT. YES He sent me a a PTC4 SS. 2 loaners later I was back at the rev limiter. My first WOT doing a rapid right emergency test turn. I came to in the passenger seat area. :)(y)
I bought 2 props. 1 for just me in the boat. Another for 6, 200 pound seniors seated correctly to balance the boat level. The drive Trim Control does nothing. The boat is on full plane in about 1 second.
D I Y has no place. When selecting the correct 2 props.
Edit
A funny about the first PTC4 prop sent to me. I am idling in gear. Floor the throttle to WOT position. Engine almost STALLS out. :) I pull the throttle back to idle. I am going to like this style of prop.

Ken is a good guy.
Got me squared away with my boat.

The 14x17- 4 blade I was running performed pretty well, but was hurting my top end when comparing notes with other owners

Ken suggested a 15x15 Enertia. Picked up my top end. Dropped fuel consumption, increasing my range by 10% (~ 30 miles per tank)

I am amazed by the power and control I have with an inboard with a prop shaft and triple fins on the bottom of the boat, can turn on a dime at any speed.

I sent Ken my numbers a while back. He flat out told me not to bother changing the prop as I probably wouldn't gain anything. I told him I was willing to pay, and he said don't. I'll gladly reccomend him on that principal alone.

I do get a little chine walk at speed but after seeing how little boat is actually in the water on plane... thats going to happen on an old deep v with no pad. My drives so deep it won't blow out if I try or... if I'm running way (and I mean wayyyyy) too much trim. Like well beyond would should be run on an I/O. Actually I lied. I've gone airborne. It blows out then lol.

My fun story on how I know it doesn't blow out... my buddy was out with me one day... his boat for whatever reason runs best if you come up on plane at the trim you would normally run... I've seen this in a couple boats but typically there's something else going on for it to be the case... wrong prop, poor weight distribution, etc. Anyway, impressed with how mine ran he asked me to do the same and see if it would launch harder than it already does... I knew the outcome of this already but humored him. On plane trimmed normal came off plane... punched it and the bow just shoots straight up. Scared the crap out of him I'm laughing. I knocked the drive down she hopped right up trimmed out and away we went.
