Is there an easy way to get more speed out of my 1995 Honda BF25. With three people in the boat the speed is dramatically decreased. I bought the motor used but I believe it has the original prop still on the motor (9 1/4 x 12). I have read a few posts about re-jetting the carbs on a BF35 to make it a BF 45. Is this possible for the 25 hp Honda? The motor is on a 14' flatbottom boat with 48" bottom. Can someone give me a few ideas please.
Brian

Howdy, Syfert.

I really doubt that the differences in 25 and 35hp Hondas is limited to jets. I think you would end up with a rich-running 25 that didn't perform as well as the original. You are talking about a 40% increase in hp.

Your best return on investment in search of optimum top speed would be in hull surface condition and in propping and rigging your engine.

To optimize your prop you will need a tachometer. There is abundant advice for "propping out" an engine in the archives here. A search will keep you occupied for hours. There will also be advice on how to determine the best "X" dimension mounting of the engine.

Good luck. :)

Re: MORE SPEED

JB,
Thanks for the reply. I've never changed a prop on any of my outboards, can you tell me a safe alternative to the 9 1/4 X 12 prop that's on my motor now. I'm willing to give up a little power
for a little speed.

Re: MORE SPEED

Like JB said, You need a tachometer to tell you what your RPMs are in order to know what prop to use! changing a prop without knowing your RPMs is a shot in the dark and can cause engine damage by over reving it!

More speed? After all, you have a 25 HP outboard, what do you expect to achive?

LubeDude

Re: MORE SPEED

If you give up power for speed, you can forget hauling more than yourself and maybe a small child and still get on plane.
As stated above, a tachometer is a must, as well as knowing the max wide open throttle range of your engine.
There are many items to look at in terms of increasing speed, but we must have a base-line to start with....it's not as simple as just changing props.

Re: MORE SPEED

Funny thing, I noticed a dramatic decrease in speed in my Acura GSR automobile when 3 of my friends get in.
