Ok, so its not a boat trailer. I am about to purchase a car hauler for my race car. It needs some work but the price is perfect. It had surge hydralic brakes. The coupler had been replaced several years back thus killing the brake system. I am going to be putting about 4000 pounds on the trailer, with its weight around 1000 for 5000 total. I pull with a F250 with a BEEFY suspension and upgrades so thats not an issue. Heres the question, I know, about time huh I am wanting to replace the coupler anyhow, and I am wanting to make the brakes work again. It appears to be about the same cost to 1: Replace standard coupler with surge hydralic unit, replace lines, and rebuild wheel cylinders vs 2: Replace the whole axle with one with electric brakes and put a controller into my truck. Which would you do and why? I do a lot of backing with it so if that is a concern please tell. I have no experiance with the hydralic units, and minimal with electrics.
