I took the boat out today after hopefully fixing the problem w/ ignition. I have a couple of questions. My lower unit appears to be leaking water around the seam where it bolts up while on the muffs. I am going to put an impeller in it, and was wondering if this issue needs to be addressed. Also, when the motor is turned sharp, if a good amount of throttle is applied, it seems to go into neutral by itself. I know its an electric shift, so it couldnt be a cable issue.
Nobody ever replied about the ford solid state ignition posting I created. Nobody ever thought about putting it on an outboard?

Hi rick.....

Most engines will leak at the seam when running on muffs....nothin' to worry about.

What probably is happening when you go into a turn is the prop is sucking air in and cavitating. Engine revs high and boat slows down? Pull outta the turn and she grabs again?

Didn't see your thread on the ignition so can't comment on it.

Keep us posted.....thanks.

I was having a prob with ignition not making spark but i moved some grounds and it started working. I raised the question about possibly putting ford solid state ignition on there b/c hook up is basically the same.Cavitation makes sense but it still does it when I straighten the wheel. I have to put it in neutral then put it back in gear.
thanx

Prop hub might be spun. Take the prop off and using a water proof paint or nail polish, draw a line from the rubber hub to the metal part of the prop. This is your reference line. Put the prop back on and go boatin'. After the next occurence, pull the prop and see if the reference line still matches. If not, spun hub.

Not sure about the ignition. Never tried it myself.

Keep us posted....

Rick: I had a letter, and diagram a man sent me explaining how he made the Ford ign. work. I checked this week-end, and I can't find it back. As I recall, about the only thing he had to change was the rotor. He did that by reducing the width of the lobes. The only thing I'm sure about is that he did make it work, the ign. pak was from an early 70's Ford.

Ill check the hub. RJ, if you find the letter, I would sure like to see it or hear the details. Ford ignition boxes are only like 15 bucks a piece. 1976 Ford ignition would be the one to use I think because it is solid state but there is an extra wire that was removed (blue wire). Duraspark started in 77 I believe. Not sure how many amps it draws though.
