79 Searay, 228 Mercruiser , swapping '98 5.7

Thanks for your help so far, now my question is,now knowing i have an early alpha type outdrive, and not a TR, which bell housing is needed, the '79-228, or the 98 5.7 , and is the older gimble set-up ok?(the '98-5.7 was hooked to a Bravo-3) Also, any tips on utilizing the late model manifolds and engine mount seapump with the old outdrive, and it having an impeller type pump?

sorry to leave you hangin...been busy.....will new motor fit? yes, but watch out for this stuff......use the bell housing that is on the new motor, you cannot put old coupler/bell housing on new motor. next, you are goin from log manifolds to center risers...if you have the exhaust yoke for the new motor, bolt it in....the old 3" exhaust yoke wont line up with the new manifolds and butchery will be needed.....next,wiring...did you have an ampmeter in the dash? some mods to the umbilcal harness in the boat may be needed...the umbilical wont plug into the one on the engine, it will have one to many pins...next, use the pump in the drive, toss the engine pump at somebody who can use it....other wise this is the usual, tear yer hair out, drink an swear, run cause you dont got wonna them engine swaps...LOL....

The new bell should bolt up to the old sheild and if it doesn't you can use the old bell of the old engine .Now for the raw water hook-up you'll have to put a thu-hull fitting in and run it to the new pump on the engine .Plug the old hose barb on the sheild .Cut the hose that comes into the sheild from the leg. You still need the pump in the leg because it helps cool the upper part of the drive . As for the exhaust I'm not sure if you have a one piece or two piece exhaust y . The new engine should have center rise manifolds , the old engigne probbly had rear rise manifolds so you will need to extend the exhaust to them but it can be done.Measure the outside diam. of the exhaust-y and let us know .

Re: more questions,mercruiser engine swap

Good info guys, thanks alot. I do have an alt. guage , and I have the harness from the boat this motor was salvaged from, Should I splice the newer coupler into the old harness? And let me add one potential option here,I just found out I may be able to get the bravo3 outdrive that was with the 5.7 motor Ive already acquired,The gimbal ring has already been sold off tho, so, If my transom will accept the bravo3, is it worth the 3 grand or so to upgrade ? Or do I roll with the old set-up and related swap headaches and bank the 3grand.
