Re: more power anybody?

I believe that he wants a solution to charging his trolling motor battery at home out of the boat.

A little more information would help us find a solution for you.

What model/year outboard are you running? Do you trailer or leave at a marina?

Re: more power anybody?

ok hows this, on my boat i have two bateries one for the outboard and one for the trolling motor . the outboard charges its baterie wen its runing due two its charging sistem corect , but the troling motor does not i have to charge the baterie at home with a plug in , is ther anything i can install to charge it on the boat wile the outboard is on posibly, or is this all i can do cus i do like to troll around but the baterie dies to quick , and i dont want to run off same bateries cus i already have a bunch of stuff runing off the outboard baterie, thats why i have two bateries , i guess i have a fear of running out of baterie power wile out there and having to try to pull start that beast lol, do you here me now

Re: more power anybody?

there is a way but most outboards dont put out enough amps to charge both batteries best bet is to get 2 batteries for trollor motor and swap them out on boat if one dies then when at home charge both batteries

Re: more power anybody?

what about that onboard charger ? i did a google serch and it seems they take the extra charge that the starting battery doesnt need once the outboard charges it. then itll start charging the trolling bateries almost eliminating the need to charge any bateries at home. wich makes sence since ive only charged the starting battery at the begining of the season , and its maintained its charge due to the outboard. im going to invest in a onboard charger i think thats the best way since i dont want to add another battery due to waight and space on the boat those batteries get heavy lol

Sounds like you may be talking about a charging system, which will not be cheap. An onboard charger will still have to be connected to a 120V source in order to charge your batteries. Also, it's likely you're overestimating the charging capabilities of your outboard. This topic has been discussed extensively in this section. A few keyword searches should provide lots of info. I'd strongly encourage you to perform one before you shell out a bunch of cash.

Re: more power anybody?

He doesn't want to charge at home!!!! He wants to charge from the engine. But since we have no idea what engine or its horsepower we have no idea what the charging system capacity is. So - Sir - give us something to go on. Outboard charging systems vary from as little as 5 amps to 30 amps or more. Now then, consider your trolling motor battery life. Lets assume you have a 40 pound thrust troller. That motor draws about 40 amps every hour it runs at its fastest speed. Probably 1/2 - 2/3 that at slower speeds. So if you ran the boat for just one hour at the fastest speed you have drained 40 amps from the battery. Now assume you have a 10 amp alternator on the engine. That means you would have to run the engine WIDE OPEN for four hours to charge that battery. That's why we need more information on your engine and the troller. Charging a trolling motor from the engine is generally not recommended just because of the little benifit it provides. It may "prolong" run time by a bit but you still neede to charge the battery fully at home or the dock using a protable or on-board charger.

you would most likely have to run at wot for hours to charge a trollor motor battery off the motor not worth it would get pricey in gas cost

Yeah, you'd have to run the main engine for a long time to charge up the trolling battery.

Honda makes those little almost silent generators they have a 12vdc charging output at 15 amps.... It should be cheaper to run and quieter than the outboard engine

You're talking about the EU1000 or EU2000. The EU2000 is a better buy if you also want AC power; it only cost's a little more and has double the AC output. If all you want is the DC charging circuit their output is the same. You will also have to buy the battery charging cord with either unit, but they are cheap.
