more carb questions

I need some clarification. I believe I am making this too difficult. I have read that the floats in carbs need to be parallel with the bowl and I understand that but at what level. My Johnson 55hp does not give me a measurement but suggests a gauge that I dont have. If anyone can tell me at what is the space between the edge of the carb and bottom of the float. I have rebuilt the carbs and found that there is gas seeping at the gaskets, I am planning on removing the carbs rechecking everything and putting it back together. The boat starts when the warm up lever is on full. Then it dies out when the lever is placed back down. The boat will not get up on plane.
Just an FYI, power pack is new, one coil is new, other coil tested and is ok, spark is good and compression is 165 on one cylinder and 175 on the other. Any ideas in direction would be appreciated. This forum is my boating encyclopedia.

Re: more carb questions

If you take off the carb, take off the float bowl, and turn the carb upside down, the weight of the float will push the float needle into the float needle seat. If the bottom of the carb (where the bowl attaches) is parallel to the ground, the float arm should also be parallel with the bottom of the carb and the ground. This is the correct float setting. If the they are not parallel, bend the tab on the float arm until they are parallel.

Re: more carb questions

thank you for your reply. Took them off and rechecked them. Did a little bending and they look good. Having someone come out and link and sync it for me today. Hopefully we will be good to go. :)

Re: more carb questions

Mechanic was here. He thought at first the lower carb was still fouled out. What he found was I have intermittent spark on one cylinder. We have a new power pack and one new coil. He switched coils and it didnt make a difference. Sometimes the upper one fires sometimes the lower one fires. The throttle needs to be almost open for it to stay running. We checked the plugs and I will get new ones. He is going to bring out a few test coils and we shall try it again. He obviously cant link/sync it till he gets these other issues resolved. I believe he is a little stumped. He is going to recheck compression on it tomorrow as well. When he twists the spark plug wire on the upper plug you can hear it power up. He checked the inside of wire and says it is fine. I guess we will know more tomorrow. Any ideas of what to do next??
