more accurate fuel tank reading?

I guess my concern is when we were heading back in from cruisen yesterday our fuel gauge was anywhere from a 1/4 to 1/2 tank depending on personnel/load placement and the trim of the boat. The tank is the boats original (1986) aluminum tank with an electronic fuel sending unit that is hidden under the deck in the rear of the boat. Is there anything I can do to keep a more accurate reading on my fuel tank regaurdless the level that boat sits at?

Go to a WEMA reed type sensor. No more needle bouncing around and you get a lot better accuarcy for ~ $10 more than the lever type senders. The calculations from my fuel flow sensor and my fuel level readings are pretty darn close.

Re: more accurate fuel tank reading?

I had asked the same or a similar question a couple of weeks ago. Here is the thread if you are interested:

My conclusion is that although there may be better technology available I would just take the reading at the dock either in the boat alone or well trimmed and treat the 1/4 tank line as empty (time for a refill).

Lowrance LMF-200 or 400 and a fuel flow sensor is a great upgrade. You'll know exactly how much fuel you have left at all times. Mine's been better than 99% accurate over the 4 seasons I have used it.

When gas runs out fuel fill, it is F. When engine stops running, it is E. :) Simple like a weather rock.

I'll only go by what mine says when sitting still or at idle speed. Like you've noticed, even sitting still can differ if folks move around. Everything I've read about the fuel flow sensors, they are great but not something I've yet to invest in.

If/when you replace the sending unit call the tank manufacturer (read the data plate on top of the tank) and buy the exact replacement. It will be more accurate than the after market ones.
