Re: Morality

If I had to put the blame on anything , I'd say socity as a whole and a much faster life style nowadays, and I think not being able to give your kids a spanking when they need it , Sesame Street is not good programing for kids because they tell the kids that they are special and the kid grows up thinking I can do no wrong because Im special ,, Some may or may not agree , Hey! thats your point of view and this mine!

Re: Morality

Kids are desensitized now to the point where they don't flinch when seeing something gross. They think it is normal.

Re: Morality

Morality has not changed,we like to think the good old days were better. What has changed is our information. Now we see a lot more of what has always been going on.
If you do not believe this, you should read the books of the Marquise De Sade who lived around the times of the French revolution.

Morality has not changed.

What and how people define morality has changed.
Or what they think morality is, has changed.
Or how they justify their own actions and desires has changed.

But moral is as it always was and will be.

Re: Morality

Back when I was in high school (that happened right after a big voice said let thier be light) The girls didnt put out, and we sure didnt hound them to till we had found the RIGHT one. Now days birth control is the rule after 13 or so.
We didnt do drugs (didnt say anything about cold beer) and we respected our elders, Around here thoes are things long forgotten, I see great change.
Never was a divorce in my family, sure cant say that any more.
Change change everwhere, no end in site.
But ao many advancements have been made, My grandpa went from a horse and buggy to a man on the moon, maby we just advanced too fast.

Rolmops you are absolutely correct.

Funny you mentioned Marquise DE Sade. You may also aware of the fact that he created S&M. :D :D . And the term SADomy is an extension of his name.

Re: Morality

Morality is learned. The weight and importance of almost everything has changed.

Tell a lie, big deal. Steal, well if you wanted it or if by chance you looted it, or if they person you stole from was rich, fine. Free condoms in the lunch room. Sodomy is now a lifestyle choice to be taught. Skip school, hey everyones doing it. Feed your own children, no way thats the governments job. Hey its just a little pot, ex, heroin, crack. 10 to 33% of all (depending on your source) children are aborted. Teachers having sex with students, they need therapy. Priests abusing alter boys. Teen pregnancy is to be celebrated and day cares in schools. 400 million dollars for CEO's is immoral. Having affairs outside of marriage is a personal choice? But definately an immoral one. We celebrate it on TV every night. Vandalizing public property (immoral) is now called art. Quiting on your children by letting them quit school is immoral. Frivolous lawsuits and multi-million dollar settlements for hot coffee is immoral. Ignoring abuse because it is not our business is immoral.

Things that were not even beleived could happen are considered commonplace today. There is right and wrong, all we have today are shades of grey so nobody can be wrong.

Re: Morality

Throught history we have had rises and falls in our moral codes, Greeks, Romans then to the middle ages and chastity belts. Marque De la Sade to Queen Victoria. Im saying were on a down swing now in a short 50 years. What is the cause? What Was the cause in the past?
I have had many times more what I consider INDECENT proposals put to me in recent years than ever in the days of my youth. Both from women (unheard of in my youth) and in business dealings.

Remember, the Marquis was imprisoned for those writings because they were immoral. Today, no one is imprisoned for writing, publishing, or distributing such works.

So in effect, your reference to the Marquis is a prefect example of how morality HAS changed.

Edit: as I recall, that the Marquis writings even survived was keep secret until the late 1800s, and wasn’t made available to the public until around the 1920’s or 1930’s.

All things are relative. The best explanation of what you question was stated in a previous post by Andrew Leigh. Since you are so adept at digging you should have no problem finding it. If the shoe fits, wear it.

Heycods said "Back when I was in high school (that happened right after a big voice said let thier be light) The girls didnt put out....." I'm not sure when he was in highschool or where but when I transferred from a big city grade school to a country school in about 1937, I was shocked to see 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls in my class having sex behind a hedge during morning recess. I didn't even know what they were doing!

Re: Morality

Subjects may not have changed but the available information sure has. Kids can get on the web and see a person being beheaded and/or shot. There is no protection as there once was. It was a big deal at one time to see dead bodies on TV at supper time during the Viet Nam era.
