ocean - You would be far better off askin folks with local knowledge. So much depends on the depth, type anchor, tidal flow and type bottom. What works in one situation will not necessarily be good for another.

Re: mooring weight???

I don't know of any formula, but can tell you what we used to install in Lake Michigan. On a boat your size we used a small railroad wheel, approx 500#. The chain needs an extra 10' for movement and tide, plus 5 or 10' to allow the weight to sink in the mud, plus extra to provide the needed slope to enable weight to hold.

DO NOT use concrete, it is not dense enough, it has a bouyancy factor and looses a higher % of its weight in water.

Best to contact a local "pro" that has a work boat or barge, and uses the right chain, hardware, bouys, and weights.

Re: mooring weight???

If you can dig the mooring in it will not matter what weight it is as the suction it creates will fix it. I have seen mooring made of just two pieces of crossed wood buried, that are holding boats bigger than yours. Once buried in the sand the suction is so great even a digger cannot pull them out. As suggested ask what others are using and whether the bottom is stable or constantly eroding. If there is any danger of a buried "deadman" becoming uncovered then you will be more reliant on the weight used than the suction effect.

Re: mooring weight???

I've been using a mushroom mooring anchor for years in a tidal river for my 25 foot Cruisers Inc. boat.
The formula we use is 10 lbs. for every foot of boat. I have a 250 lb. mushroom with 35 foot of chain attached to a mooring ball and have never had a problem with dragging.
We pull all the anchors every fall so the ice flows don't drag them away.
