Monterey vs Bayliner

I am considering 2 used boats to buy hope you can help me. The first boat is a 2001 Monterey Edge 180 with the Merc 135, under 150 hrs, coming from a dealer so there is a drivetrain warranty. The boat is very clean, never moored. The second boat is from a private seller, 2005 Bayliner 185 with the same Merc engine as the first. Boat is clean and has about 100 hours on it. The trim motor needs to be replaced but seller says he will pay for it. From the research I have done Monterey seems to be a little better quality than Bayliner, even though the Monterey is 4 years older I am leaning towards that boat. The fact that it does have some warranty is also a plus in my mind. I should add that both boats are about the same price.

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

cut a deal with the dealer......they will want to loose that stock asap.

they are hungry right now, and will do just about anything to move a 10 year old boat.

the 05 bayliners were good.....actually...i really liked them.....good...light ....fast boats.

Be aware that a dealer powertrain warranty will have plenty of stipulations to go along with it. They might even require you to get all the maintenance done at there shop. Check the fine print!!! Most the time this is a sales gimmick and if you don't maintain the motor properly or the motor gets blown because of a bad oil pump etc it may not be covered under there warranty.

Do both of these boats have hour meters on them? If that is where you are getting your hours from, be careful. These hour meters can be replaced very easily and to give you an idea, I put atleast 200 hours on my boat in a season. Good luck

good point on the hours chris.....

both boats are really low hours....

in canada we get an average of 80 hours a season......that is only 20 days at 4 hours a pop. (my self,,,,,is a lot more than that) but the average for a standard boater is 80 hours

Thanks for the advice, both boats have hour meters. I am aware that you can disconnect the hour meters so there is no real way to check it. Does anyone have a preference as regards to the Monterey or Bayliner regarding quality. I am looking for a reliable boat, we will use it mainly on weekends on a lake. We just go for short cruises on the lake and then drop anchor in a cove and fish and swim. So top speed and ability to pull skiers or tubes are not really a concern for us.

If both boats have been maintained and are in good shape I would go with the Monterey

Re: Monterey vs Bayliner

as far as quality,...... bay liner is an entry level boat....so it is made fast.....but that doesnt mean the build quality suffers......the fittings and accessories will be of better quality on the monterey.

but......we don't know about the price ???......if you are getting an 05 bayliner for 5k......and a 10 year old monterey at the same price........hands down....go with the bayliner.

there is a deprecation point of boats......roughly around the 10 year mark......the bay liner wont reach that for a while....as long as you keep the boat in good shape.....you wont loose as much money when you sell it in 5 years....where as the monterey will deprecate fast after the 12 year mark.

so.....we really dont have enough information to help guide you to a fully informed decision.

Thank you all for your input. The price on the Monterey for boat and trailer is $7100, the price for the Bayliner boat and trailer is $7500.

Re: Monterey vs Bayliner

As much as I can't stand bayliners, they have come a long way over the years and the one you are talking about I believe has the same hull as the sea rays of the same size. Newer boat for the same money and basically the same hours, no brainer for me.

Make sure you keep either boat covered if you do buy and remember it is a buyers market! Low ball offer to start!

I really don't buy a boat for resale in mind, I buy it to enjoy. If your concerned about the resale on a small boat, don't buy one. You should really sea trial both boats and see which one suits you and your family best. Don't forget to get a survey and have a certified marine mechanic check the motors out.

Do my eyes deceive me? No Bayliner bashing??:p

Bayliners suck, thats what everyone who doesn't own one tells me anyways ;)

I've got a 2005 195 classic and it has been a good trouble free boat. If you take care of them, they will give you many years of service.

Re: Monterey vs Bayliner

I had a 2005 Bayliner 185 and we really loved it. It was a nice looking trouble free boat. Build quality was just OK. I guess they cut a few corners to get the price to the $13k I paid for it brand new. You could hear the water through the hull like there was no foam in there and little things like the plastic grab rails and handles fell apart after a couple years in hot weather.

I now have a restored 1986 19' Searay (long story), and it seems like a much more solid boat. Even at 19 years older than the Bayliner, it is more solid and smoother ride. Stainless steel grab rails and handles and a very solid, quiet hull.

So I guess what I am saying is that I would probably go with the Monterey as long as there is no rot anywhere. Even a newer boat (including the Bayliner) can have rotten wood if it wasn't properly cared for, regardless of how many hours it has.

Re: Monterey vs Bayliner

Although I've only had my Monterey since July, I love it. I did alot of research before we purchased this boat, compared against Searay, Hurricane, Rinker and Regal for the most part. What I finally decided was the Monterey offered the best bang for the buck and the quality was up there (IMO) with even the Cobalts.

I don't know much about Bayliners other than what I've heard so I'll hold comments on that. My biggest advice is to go with the boat YOU/WIFE feel most comfortable with.

actually.....75 for an 05 is cheap where 71 for a 01 is kinda spendy.

True, but we are talking an 05 boat that was $13k new and an 01 that was probably $25k new.

My only comment would be that the one bayliner I did own was 18 foot capri (yes it was blue and white) lol. I never had any trouble with it but I thought it rode really rough though And I know nothing about Monterey's

Re: Monterey vs Bayliner

Thanks for all of your input and opinions, they helped me a great deal. We finally decided on the Monterey for a couple of reasons. First I think the initial quality of the Monterey is better than the Bayliner. J.D. Powers ranked them #3 in overall customer satisfaction in the small runabout category in 2009 behind Cobalt and Regal. The other reason was I went and inspected the Bayliner, the boat had been moored last summer and the owner never even bothered to clean the bottom and hull when he took it out of the water. It also needed the trim motor replaced which he had failed to mention before. I realize that those are minor issues but left me wondering what else he was not telling me and how well he had maintained the boat if he was willing to leave the bottom covered in slime for a winter. We had also dealt with the dealer selling the Monterey before and had always been satisfied with our dealings. As far as vega vs pinto, not everyone can afford a Cobalt and not everyone needs one. We are just looking for a good reliable boat to cruise around the lake and fish and swim from. Thanks again for all of you help it was greatly appreciated.
