I learned how to tie the monkeys fist knot the other day.

I put this on the fishing board instead of the boating board because i wanted to tell you guys that just visit this board inpeticular that it is a good knot and has potential to be useful to us with a boat.

I used a 100 ft, quarter inch rope and started in the middle makeing the knot itself.

I used a cats eye marble (thanks to my daughter for the donation of the boulder size marble from her private collection) for the core weight.

After i finished the knot I used the indian method of makeing cordage to double the rope up and incorparate the knot in with out haveing to tie it to the main line.

Also this way of doubleing the rope will keep it from unravleing itself.

In the end I had a 1/2 inch, 40 ft [+\-] rope that will be perfect for tossing to someone on a dock or in another boat so it or they can be secured.

Try it out....I promise that you will like it.

Derwood.

Re: Monkeys fist knot.

I just can't stop laughing.... I looked up the directions and decided to give it a shot. See the time? 12:51am hmmm need rope...all I had was a cheap piece of plastic rope and what a mess...still laughing. Took me a long time just to get my hand free ;)

Now I am on a quest and will try this with "normal" rope in the morning!

Bob

You think your hurten now....wait till you get it tied and want to tighten it up....

Witch directions did you try? There are two differant ones. the one that shows the rope in a picture around a mans hand is the simple one and it comes out the same i belive.

If you have any questions about how to cordage the rope the way i described just ask....it's pretty simple.

also....if you try to use a core with it you can't just use three raps....you must use more or it will let the core slip out when you are swinging it...

when you get it tied right take it outside (in the house is a bad thing waiting to happen) and wrap the loose rope in one hand with just the tips of your fingers pointing slightly upwards so the rope does'nt slip off your hand....then pick something to toss it at...

with a couple of twirls for momentem it will launch right where you want it to go and the rope reels off your hand just right.

you may have to practice a little but it was natural for me...realy smooth.

I can think of all kinds of stuff to do with this...and i am working on some other knots and will post them if i think they are good ones.

Derwood

Hey Derwood :) Knot bad! Knot bad at all!

Yeah, I used the "finger" method and tightening it was best done starting from the end and working my way back to the beginning.

Sure works better when you use real rope and not plastic line.

Bob

I don't have the time or paitence to try to learn to tie that knot right now still unpacking and back to work today. Maybe when i get things set up and after the first couple weeks of school though.........
Anyway if you don't know this was originaly created to provide a weaponless weapon for sailors visiting ports that did not allow traditional weapons. Imagine this knot swung at an opponents head especially if you used a lead grape shot instead of a marble.
