Just purchased a used Evinrude 18HP for my son, Model 18502S E02380 (stamped on round plate on engine). Can anyone tell me what model year this is. The translation table from Model # to year I saw on this page only went back to 1980. Also, I was told the motor hadn't been started in 4 months & then in a bucket of water .. had been started annually but hadn't been on a boat for 2-3 years. Is there anything I need to do/check before I try to start it up? I'm open to any & all advise.

Thanks

Best thing to do would be to make sure that your carb is clean. Does this evinrude have a pressure tank that you have to pump up first? I have a 1956 18hp that still runs like a champ. Take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning. Engines that sit usually have carb trouble even if they have been started "once a year." If the fuel wasn't run completely out (and sometimes even if it was) the remaining fuel turns to varnish and gums up. Let us know what you find and how it runs.

Oh, and don't forget to put the plug in.

Thanks all. Got the motor fired-up yesterday & seemed to run OK but lots of smoke. After 5-10 minutes, I heard a clank and engine stopped. Couldn't get it restarted. Nothing seemed frozen .. the pull cord worked fine, had compression, prop turned manually, etc.

Now that I know the model year, I ordered a repair manual. In the meantime, any suggestions before I try to restart? I didn't see any place to clamp an earmuf-type flushing device so placed the unit in a tub of water up to the cavitation plate ... water seemed to eject properly but tub got pretty oily after a few minutes.

Thanks ;)

Pull your spark plugs. Are the oily? These engines will "load up" when they idle for a long time. Change plugs and I bet she starts up. You might need to reset your carb. I run a 32:1 mixture. The oil in your tank is either from too rich a mixture or your lower unit is leaking. Check the oil in you lower unit. Leave it out of water for a day and see if you can see it running down along your prop. If you need to, change those seals. These engines exhaust under the water so your water will get black/oily in your tank when you run them.

Thanks much .. great advise. Lot's of differences between the 1965 Evinrude & my kid's prior 1984 Johnson 9.9. The underwater exhaust certainly explains why the tank got oily. Do you think I need to worry about the waterpump before taking the motor out of the stand and onto the river (is dry rot a common problem) or is the fact that water is ejecting sufficient to presume the pump is OK?
