Re: model of engine

sorry it took me so long to post pics, but here they are. she looks a little rough because the previous owner left the motor open to the elements.

Re: model of engine

I just did the Google and found the first answer the same. But if you look at the manifold, there is a question mark.
Then, if you look at this link, you find the number doesn't say that.
http://www.mustangtek.com/FordDecode.html

The engine however looks like a Mercruiser, and in 71 Mercruiser only used the 302, not the 351.
It's also impossible to tell from your pictures if it's a staight inboard or an IO with a jackshaft. I assume the latter from your pictures, and would think the setup is a 215E Mercruiser outdrive with jackshaft.

Re: model of engine

it is a inboard not an I/O. im not going to lie that link is a bit confusing to me. all that i can get off the model number is that it is a 1971 ford industrial motor. so how do i find out if it is a 302 or a 351 if the other information on google is not correct. thanks

Re: model of engine

I can tell you that late model oil fill cap valve cover did not appear on a Ford engine till around 1985 with the advent of EFI so either you got a replaced late model valve cover or maybe a not original engine. 302's and 351's both had that style valve cover too.
The easiest way to tell the difference between a 351w and a 302w without having to take anything apart is to look at the surface where the distributor mounts vs. the flange where the intake rests on. On a 302, those two surfaces are relatively flush. On a 351w, the intake flange is about one inch higher than the distributor mount surface.
