Model 75 7.5 HP Question

I asked this same question here already today, but got no response. So I am now looking to folks with these little motors to get advice or an answer.

I have a 1969 or possibly a 1970 Model 75 7.5 HP outboard. My question is, does the shift lever move to the front of the motor as in shift it forward to make the boat go forward? Every outboard I have ever been around was like this. This motor is new to me and to propel the boat forward I have to shift the lever to the rear.

Thanks, I was figuring it's something like that. I have no idea what happened, but something did. I'll tear it apart and figure it out. To my knowledge you can't get a factory manual for these. I have the seloc, but it is worthless. The motor runs fine the way it is, but it still isn't right.

Man, I have been looking on eBay for months with no luck. I see a cd of sorts at a resonable price, but no factory manual. I have the parts break downs. My screw up was procedural obviously. I just don't know what I did as I never removed the shift shaft or cams. It's possible the previous owner screwed it up.

Actually, your shift pattern is correct for your motor. The shift handle was originally horizontal for neutral, down for reverse and up for forward. At some point someone may have removed the shift handle and re-attached it off by 90-degrees in such a way that it is now vertical for neutral, back for forward and fore for reverse. Easy enough to switch back to what it was originally...

LOL. Learn new stuff every day. This motor is new to me. The shifter side of the motor is beat to a pulp. The prior owner must have let the motor sit in the back of his truck all week to bounce around. Major paint scraped off and deep gouges in the motor cover. But the shift lever looks in good shape. I bet he replaced it at some point. I don't know if it'll turn 90 degreees or not.

Re: Model 75 7.5 HP Question

Thanks for all the comments. Got it figured out. My shift lever was mounted straight up and down, vertically. It should be horizontal. Up for forward, down for reverse. I put a video below showing this. Not my motor, but similar. So I just pulled the lever and moved it. Stupid question answered.
