my Johnson has the model number above. local parts shop told me with this model number its a 72 why would he tell me this??? Its a 50 hp Electric start 1971 from what Im getting correct?? what does the esl mean and the s at the end? Does that mean slow lol. Thanks in advance guys.

My Johnson is a 1972 esl 50hp and I know it stands for hydro electric shift, long shaft

ES means electric start, special. "Special" might refer to the shift, I don't know. L means long shaft. As for the S at the end, ignore it. They all begin the model year with a meaningless letter at the end and if there is a mid-year change in design, the letter changes to something else. Only important if you are ordering parts affected by the change.
