This one has got me stumped so far so I figured who better to ask than you guys. :)

I am in the process of replacing my water pump with a sierra kit #18-3317 pump housing kit ( replaces Merc #46-57234A3). For my 73 Glassmaster 165 Mercruiser L6

My problem is that there seems to be no upper housing replacement seal like the one that is in the new bottom housing and in my original upper housing. The only seal I see is the one that slides down on top of the housing just like the one I took off. There is nothing to seal the actual housing at the top. My kit's bag was sealed when I got the kit and inventoried the new parts.

Is the seal missing? Or does it no longer use an upper seal beyond the round rubber seal that slides down the drive shaft to rest against the upper housing? The latter just does not seem likely to me.

Help me out because I want to get back on the water ASAP and need to know if I need Iboats to send me the missing part if it is missing.

Thanks much,
Bill

That is all there is. The impeller seals againt the inside of the pump housing and the lower SS plate.

Hey Don, just one more quick question regarding the kit and installation.

Is the smallest rubber washer/seal that has a shallow groove in each side the one that seals the lower unit to the upper where the grease hole connects?

I figure the other two small seals are replacement seals for the vent and drain screws.

Correct? :)

Forgetting that quad ring has cost many DIYers an outdrive because they didn't realize it even existed.
