I was talking to my wife about towing our new boat (SeaRay 180 Sport @2100 lbs empty) with my Dodge Dakota, she mentioned that she thought her 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320 (3.2liter V6 automatic) was rated to tow 5000 lbs. I checked the owner's manual and sure enough with a class III hitch which we had installed when we bought it (we bought it used, the car not the hitch). Is this a good tow vehicle for the boat? My concern is the short wheel base? Any thoughts on this...???? Thanks rookieboater

Re: ML320?

Just because it's rated for 5000lbs doesn't mean it's a good to tow that. The Dakota will out tow it any day of the week...

Re: ML320?

I have recently switched from a '98 ML320 to a '99 ML430.

I put 130,000 miles on the ML320. During that time I towed my BW Montauk about 12,000 miles, A BW Outrage 18 about 5,000 miles and my 18' utility trailer loaded with whatever about 1,000 miles. Never a whimper from the ML320, including a couple of straight emergency stops. Nothing like AWD, ABS and MB's stability control program to help you keep full control, all the time. Usually got 15mpg while towing.

I have towed with a Jeep Grand Wagoneer, LWB F150 (460 cid) and various "compact" trucks. None could touch the ML (320 or 430) for comfort, control and security when towing up to 3500lb. I didn't tow anything heavier than that.

Just be sure that any load over 3,000lb has surge brakes. The ML brakes and traction are superior, but it is not a supertruck.

They are definitely the best tow vehicles I have ever used within their specified range.

So, Rookieboater, I agree with your wife. Try the ML320. You will be impressed.

Good luck. :)
