MK Endura 36 intermittent hesitations . . .

I think I've isolated this issue to the 5th speed so I took the head cover off and it was nice to see the 6 connections not soldered as they used spade connections which makes it easy to replace the 5 speed forward reverse switch.

I just ordered one off the web for $15.95 plus $3.95 for USPS shipping. Nice to see that $3.95 instead of the usually $9.99 for shipping from most sites.

At least it will make it cost effective if I had to send it back if it does not solve my problem.

I put an ohm meter on the red and then the black wire to the plug and squeezed and tugged all along each wire search for a break, but it all looks good.

Anyone else have this switch go and cause the Minn Kota to abruptly stop and go?

Nice quick response from a site that sells Minn Kota parts from their tech dept:

PM me if you want the name of the site. This site does not like direct links to competitors!

Response:
There are three things that come to mind that would cause this problem with the switch being the most likely. *These motors, along with the switch, also have a speed coil potted into the nose cone of the lower unit that helps to set the speeds of the motor. *This is less likely, but could also be the problem. *Another thing it could be is water in the lower unit, but you would see it do this on all speeds, not just high. *The easiest thing to do would be to put a new switch in it and see if it works, then we can go from there. *I have included a link for you to view/purchase this part on line. *Let me know if you have any questions

Re: MK Endura 36 intermittent hesitations . . .

Update: Installed the $15 forward reverse switch. Simple to do. Worth a shot as this is a wear item since it's always moving when one adjusts the speed. But no cigar! Still hesitated after 10 minutes use.

Spoke with a tech from the parts site and he said it's probably the speed coil which is embedded in the nose cone and not user replaceable or worth it.

It's only a 2005 model, but I did get 6 seasons of light use out of it. I'm going to take it totally apart and selling it piece meal on EBay or Craig's list. The sum of the individual parts are pricey on the parts site. The armature alone is like $60! I'll put the proceeds towards a new MK.

Checked out the MK Traxxis 55 digital, variable speed control transom mounts. But at around $350-400 they are pricey for a transom mount.

I'm done fumbling around with transom mounts anyway. More trouble trying to steer and less fishing time. My Daughter's boat which she bought is a 99 and it came with a few year oldMK Power Drive V2 and I've used it on her rig and it makes trolling a pleasure.

I've avoided the bow mounts because I did want to give up the bow platform real estate or pay to have my trailerable cover re-customized to allow for the TM. But I realized that I had installed the MK slide release bracket on hers and if I take the TM off for trailering the cover will fit over the small black bottom plate that remains after I slide the TM off.

The higher end V2 can be had with auto pilot and a hand held controller. Life is short! Who deserves a new V2 more than me :D. I figure I can use the rod in my right hand and rubber band the controller onto my beer can. Or let the auto pilot map out a course. After all, one has only "two hands" :D
