How do I mix the gas and oil for a 2005 90HP EXL PTO? I just bought the engine used. I am not at the boat so I can't look at it. Someone was going to fill it with gas for me so hence the question. Is there a separate filling bottle for the oil? Do I mix it with the gas directly?
Thanks for answering. Former owner is not available

Your engine is equipped with an oil injection system which has a separate tank for the oil. It will not be pre-mixed unless someone has disabled the injection system.

What is the s/n of your engine? When you post that, I will see if I have the service manual and I can get you the owner manual as well.

Hi there, Welcome to iboats!

Where to add oil would depend on if someone has removed the stock oil injection system or not.

There should be an oil tank mounted to the engine. Make sure the oil lines are not capped off.

Recommended oil would be TC-W11 or TC-W3 2-cycle outboard oil.

If you don't know be safe and go with 50:1 pre-mix until you know your on engine oil tank level is lowering. 50:1 is 1 pint of TC-W3 (Marine 2 cycle oil) to 6 gallons of gas. Set your engine vertical and make a mark on the oil tank at the top of the oil level. Run the boat for half hour or so and if the oil level drops you can forgo the premix the next time you gas up. If not, run it always.

I have the '02 version of that engine and it is just like yours. You can't tell I disabled my oil injection system as all you have to do is to remove the oil pump drive gear; unless you run it and look for oil consumption from the tank. I left oil in the tank because I didn't want to fool with the oil safety alarms and it already had 3/4 tank of oil and didn't feel like siphoning it out. Mine wasn't causing a problem and you shouldn't necessarily be alarmed, but I didn't want to trust it on an 11 year old engine. My engine, my choice.

Thanks to all for the reply advice. What oil would you recommend. Quicksilver 2cycle? otherbrands? Thank you!

Any oil with the designation TCW-3 or TCW-III is what is recommended for your engine. There are conventional oils, semi-synthetic, and full synthetic to choose from. Semi and full synthetic will smoke less. And here is a word of advice. DO NOT allow anyone to fuel your boat for you -- especially if they have no more experience than you as failure to understand what was just explained can turn a perfectly good engine into an expensive anchor. When buying a used engine you absolutely MUST determine if the oil injection system has been removed, disabled, or is if left in tact, is even functional. If any of these three scenarios is true, you MUST mix oil with the fuel at a 50:1 rate (one pint in six gallons). If the oil injection system is functional then you simply keep the oil reservoir under the engine cover full of oil.

Agree with Texasmark, premix and mark the reservoir, then run it for a bit. She may smoke a little more but you'll know if it's oiling...
