Just picked up my new Honda 50 .The dealer suggested I put 1/2 cup of oil in the 5 gal tank for one time only to help the breakin

Anyone else out there done this ? It sounds logical

It sure isnt going to hurt, and if you want to do it to appease him, then go ahead, but I doubt that it is really going to help much as that is a very small amount of oil.. Its a four cycle, have you ever heard of a car dealer telling you to do that? Double oiling is common with the breakin of 2 cycles, but you are looking at a completly different type of engine.

Would you do this with your car, truck, lawnmower, motorcycle, etc. that are all four stroke? I think not.

It will do NOTHING in a four stoke except coke valve stems and foul spark plugs.

Find another dealer.

I would think it would be worse than no oil actually. You want the rings to seat...with less friction they won't seat as well. That's why synthetic isn't recommended until after break in. I DO use a little synthetic 2 cycle oil in all my 4 cycle engines except my truck. (about 100:1) If I had a 4 cycle boat I would probably do they same, although not on a fuel injected engine...
