I have been trying to find out the total weight of my pontoon and trailer combo
This is what I found:

Pontoon (unloaded): 1840 (NADA)
Motor (Yamaha 90): 0260 (NADA)
Trailer (Loadrite 28T-4100HGG1): 1200 (Loadrite website)
Total 4300

I have been towing it with the Endeavor that has factory towing package of 3500 lbs. So if the numbers are correct I have to buy a new towing vehicle. I would like to get a small truck if possible. (A F550 Dually Diesel 4X4 would be nice but who has the $).

What min. towing rating should I be looking for when buying a new/used truck? Also if I buy used how do I know it a truck has a towing package? I know the just because it has a hitch and a trans cooler it does not necessarily have the towing package.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your probably looking at 5000 after you hav added gas water toys and such to the toon. I would think a 1/2 ton truck would be fine. Not a small Ranger or Canyon either.

Lots of good mid size trucks and UVs are rated for 5,000lb (with tow package), Ride.

Thanks,

Realgun and JB,

I just thought about this:

Because the pontoon is 28' long would it be a good idea to stay away from short wheel base trucks?

PS: Why did I ever see my E350 van?

A "Towing package" on light duty trucks indeed generally consists of little more than a hitch, trailer wire harness/plug, and a tranny cooler. A numerically higher axle ratio and limited slip differential are also good to look for, but are usually options that are separate from a factory tow package. If you're looking at newer Chevy's, many have a "tow/haul" mode button on the end of the shifter...this is a sure clue it's likely factory-equipped to tow. I'm not real familiar with the other brands.

the base chevy pickup (WT) work truck which has dual zone A/C , auto, radio and such will be 13000 dollars with rebates till the 31 of may

i bought one in 2003 and you just cant do better in a full size truck for that dollar amount

the most supriseing part is that we prefer to travel in it because the seats are sweet and it realy does get 21 MPG when your not towing

tommays

You'll probably find that a short wheelbase is easier for reversing. It's more like driving a semi and it's a lot easier to reverse a semi than a boat and trailer IMHO (I do both on a regular basis).Short wheelbase's tend to have a better turning circle too.

Try one and see what you think-it's just an opinion.

The books give you 4300# dry. Add about 200# for fuel to get to 4500#.

Now think of anchor, water, cooler, etc. and you get an easy 200# more. Now at 4700#

Rule of thumb that I like is to not exceed 80% of the tow vehicles or hitch rating. If you do that, you are looking for a vehicle with a 5875# tow rating or better.

Think of it this way - if you are buying a vehicle does it make sense to get something that is at the limit, or get something that will have some headroom?

Are you ever going to go into the mountains? If so, you will want to have more than the minimums.

Jack L,

I will only be towing on flat ground and only about 1 mile or so. (Ramp is part of the community)

I have always liked Nissans (have one with 210k and still going strong) so I may be looking at the Frontier Crew Cab. It is rated at 6100 lbs and that should give me some extra room for the coolers of beer. :D

Plus, I will have room for the dogs in the back. (No wet dog smell in the SUV)
