I have a ns40d2 nissan 40 Hp which is new to me it is supposed to be a 89 model. If I shift it into reverse it grinds and slightly moves the prop and then it is very hard to shift it out of reverse. I have tried it with controls and manually and it is the same both ways. Every now and then it will slip in normally but if u accelerate it will begin grinding. I replaced the gear oil in the foot the old oil looked bad. Please help I've never had this kind of problem before and I'm not familiar with foot repairs. I am very handy with mechanics and can do just about anything with instructions

Grab a Factory service manual (available from any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer, including several forum members -- even me); using it as a guide, determine whether the clutch dog and gears are still in good shape, and that you are getting full engagement. You may need a new dog and possibly the R gear.
