Re: mississippi info
The upper Mississipi, north of St. Louis is pretty nice for boating. Dams and locks keep it in check.

South of St. Louis, the lower river, is something else again. The river is full of huge eddies and boils. Barges on the lower Mississipi are enormous, and throw wakes that can easily capsize a small boat. There are few facilities on the lower Mississippi for fueling and overnighting.

The barges on the upper section also make large wakes, but they're smaller due to the necessity of passing through the locks. There are also lots of marinas and towns along the upper Mississipi, making a cruise there quite comfortable.

Read the book, "Old Glory," described in the first link above. It's fascinating. Out of print, but your local library can get a copy on request.
