Hi, I have a 96sl700. Before getting on plan it sounds good but it has an occasional miss (maybe one or two misses). Once on plane it is all good. Someone told me that I should take the carbs off and rebuild and clean them. I think that it may just be old gas.

Can old gas cause the engine to miss a little at the hole shot? the tank was 3/4 full when I bought it. I added more gas fuel stabilizer (sta-bil and startron). I also changed the filters.

what can the engine to miss before plane.

What about additive like Lead substitute, Octane booster, and water absorber like iso-heet? Will or can any of these help me?

Also I was told that I may be too big for the ski and that just how it works, I am 200lbs.

Thanks

Too big for the ski, lol. Good one. There's no reason to use lead substitute or higher octane. If you think it's bad gas, then syphon the old gas out and fill it with new gas. Chances are though, if you haven't had the carbs rebuilt since then, that it your problem. The carbs will get deposits and gunk in them, the needles will have lots of wear, and the seats will need to be replaced. It's not usually *too* expensive to have done at a competent repair shop. Probably somewhere around $100 per carb (I don't know how many the sl700 has (2 I'm guessing).

The other think you can do it get a compression tester and have the fuel turned off while cranking the engine. It will let you know if the pistons are in good shape.

Last check, when is the last time you replaced the spark plugs and/or wires? That can be a big difference too. My money is still on the carb neededing to be rebuilt. My ski used to bog out of the hole, not miss just bog for a second or two, had the carbs rebuilt and it ran like a champ.

I changed the plugs this season but not the wires. Can I use carb cleaner to try and clean the carbs while the engine is running? I tried looking for a carb rebuild kit but can't find one.

Thanks

Carb cleaner will likely not fix your problem. They need to be rebuilt most likely, and unless you've rebuilt carbs before, you should just take it to a shop. Carburetors have a lot of springs, check balls, and tiny parts that if one is missing or out of adjustment, it makes the whole rebuild worthless. I'd take it to someone who knows what they are doing. It's worth every penny to have it done right the first time.

Most likely the plug wires are fine, I was just mentioning them if they appear worn or corroded/rusted at the contacts/torn boots/etc.
