Missing drain plug?

My new old boat is missing the drain plug. I stopped at the nearest boating supply store and they suggested a threaded brass plug, but it is very much not right. Can anyone point me in the right direction for information? Sure I can take a ruler out and measure the hole, but I'm hoping for something a little more accurate :)

Older boats did not always come with the threaded brass plugs. I believe you may be looking for a copper plug with a rubber end. You stick it in the hole, turn it until it is semi tight and bend it over.

Pictures would help also.

I'm not clear what is Not Right with the one you have.

Take a look at this link:

What the marine supply store was suggesting is a Garboard plug. If the portion in your transom is a femal thread, then it might be a simple case of obtaining the proper sized garboard plug. Otherwise you would need a drain plug instead. The link I posted should inlucde categories for all types.

Re: Missing drain plug?

Sorry for the vague question. I'm not at home, but I could post a picture later. The hole is larger than the 1/2" they suggested, and is not threaded. I'm thinking the rubber end that expands is probably what I"ll need. The boating store said there isn't a good reference book for what boats take which plugs, so I was hoping someone might know. I'm new :)

Yep...definitely sounds like the rubber expansion type plug is what you need. The good news is that they're cheaper than the threaded brass plugs. Get some spares to carry with you.

Ok so I'm headed in the right direction. I may return the brass plugs and get one of each to try the rubber ones. You're right, for just a couple more dollars I can try several versions of the rubber type.

I'm just nervous and anxious to get on the water. This will be my first trip out with it, and I am such a novice. I will look over the engine and go through some checklists I found, but otherwise it's all new :p

Re: Missing drain plug?

Ace Hardware and True Value Hardware carry a great variety of threaded and expandable rubber drain plugs. My jon boat uses a 2" diameter expandable rubber plug....the few times I've tried to launch with that plug out, you gotta know it didn't take long for the boat to start filling with water!....a couple of spares is a good idea! Good Luck!:)

As has been said and experienced countless times, it's not a matter of if you forget to put in the plug, but when!

My dad did this with one of their jet skis a few years back. We had a good laugh at his expense.

Last year my big oops was with a new to me jet ski. I sat on the water, unable to get it started...asking for help from any passerby that might have knowledge. Finally a guy says "did you try turning the gas on?" ugh..no.
