MISSING; AND FOULING PLUGS

I recently purchased a boat and it has a 1977 or 78 45hp Chrysler outboard engine in it model number 457HD. The first time I had it out it bogged itself down and killed itself. I got a tow back to the dock and I found out the plugs were carbon fouled. I replaced the plugs with hotter NGK's. It still fouled out the plugs. Aftet futher investigation I noticed the engine had a slight miss to it and the bottom spark plug fouled a lot quicker than the top plug. I have done a compression test and they both were around 110 lbs. I also looked at the points and one was black so I am going soon to replace the points and condensers. I am wondering if the coil pack for this year engine goes bad. I also am wondering if the timing cound play a role in the foul of the plugs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
i dont know anything about your engine but it sounds like its running too rich, were the plugs oily? Maybe someone will post you the correct carb settings for your motor.

Re: MISSING; AND FOULING PLUGS

Thanks ShadyAde,
I have read on here before the mixture for the gas is 50:1 and use TCW-3. I have tried to set the carb float but don't have a manual yet...it is supposed to be in the mail. thanks again hopefully someone can walk me through how to set the carb. I have tried the needle valve above the float and it did not help.

The problem could be with the float/needle & seat but your manual will have a trouble shooting section and diagrams of the carb.

c/6

Hooty
