I just noticed the little "plate" on my Volvo 280 is missing. I believe this is what is removed to change the linkage of prop rotation.
I have no idea how long, (weeks, months), it's been off.. I think I can fabricate another one from aluminum, BUT, I'm not sure what other actions I need to take. I see no gasket on outdrive, so was water always present in that area? Oil? Do I drain? Flush? Dry? The boat is in water, with no way to haul.
Also, looking at a parts exploded view, IF it's the 1 I see there, they want $145.00 for the plate! Can that be right?

I'm assuming you are missing complete back cover (B) as compared to the small name plate (A).
They do not seal on the drive, and there is always water in it. It just protects the linkage and makes the drive look better.

It's just a name plate that says 280.

Then maybe I'm wrong. I don't remember it being other than square, BUT, I can see little rods & linkage there. ?? I thought at the time, Hmmm, I can make that. Obviously I would not have thought that of the longer, larger, rounded one.
Are you saying it is solid behind it? If so, then I'm mistaken & I apologize for MY confusion.
If I keep the water weeds out, etc. it can go for awhile? Thanks,

If you can see the linkage, then you are missing the cover, part B.

Hit eBay. I wouldn't pay any more then $45 for one. Another will come up. And if you are lucky you may even find one with a tag. I was not so lucky. I had to pay $40+ for the tag alone but I still think I got a steel.

Only when they are not properly installed or tightened down.

Mine went 1,000 miles down the rivers and then fell off I guess. I'll use Loctite this time :)

It does take a while for loose screws to come all the way out.
