After I loaded the software for my new HP OfficeJet 6210, I now get a "logon" page when I first boot up. I never had that before and I'd sure like to turn it off. I like to boot my computer, go get a cup a Joe, then come back and get to it.

With this new screen now asking me to select a user, when I come back I have to wait some more.

How do I get rid of it. It's not asking for a password, just asks to select a user.

Ok, I downloaded it Rudderman, but cannot find it? I did go to control panel ,'user accounts' and it says that the only two options are to logon by selecting the user from the Welcome Screen or by the classic method of entering a password.

I don't understand why I did not have to do either prior to loading the HP printer software.

I looked there rwise. Maybe I have to reboot before it shows up. Funny it didn't mention when I 'ran' the download.

Boomer,

I don't think this HP thing and the Login screen are related. Are you the only one who usually uses this computer? If yes, you need to change the Login options in XP.

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, User Accounts, then User Acounts again (don't ask me why), Change the way users log on or off. Put a check mark in the Welcome one and then the next one, Restart. Should be all better . . .

I had my e-mail addy up, so we could do this over the phone, but you weren't quick enough. Let me know if you want to try it that way.

I'm back Quietcat. We can try it over the phone if you're available. Be nice to talk to someone from my hometown. I miss the brown. :D

As I stated, the only options I see are for the welcome screen or the classic login box.

Thanks

Big Poppa, that all takes me back to where I've been. That is to the user accounts screen. The only options given are: Welcome screen on OR classic logon screen. No other options and either one of those stop the boot just prior to loading the desktop. Thanks anyway.

I'm beginning to wonder if my small inhome network has anything to do with it. I spoke with Quietcat and his is checked just like mine but he does not get the welcome screen when he boots. Go figure.

Do you have a screen shot of what this screen looks like. Would help to narrow it down.

Boom,
Try this link. The guy has a way of turning it off. It is through the regedit. You'll see it a little ways down the page.

Windows XP Tips

WORD OF ADVICE IF YOU MESS WITH THIS, MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP THE INFO FIRST!

XP also has a system restore. Good idea to do this also. It will bring up the computer to the the time you set it when it was working.

Let me know if it works.

BP, I used your link, emailed the Principal, tried the recommendation:

WindowsXP Tips

Configure for Auto-Logon
Added 11/28/03

If you are the only person using the computer and what to have it automatically log you on,

Start / Run / "control userpasswords2" - no quotes
Uncheck User must enter a user name and password to use this computer.

It didn't work.

Bummer man. I would try some more techy support sites. I found some relevant stuff just by Googling, but they bascially noted what you have already tried. I would still call or email HP, they may know of a bug they have created or want to know. If you just bought that printer they should help.

Good talking today.

boomyal,
Go to start, programs, powertoys for windows xp, tweakui. If its not there, go to the instructions i wrote at the end of this message, then when you've got that done, come back to this point.

Then on the left hand side of the TweakUI window, click the little "+" beside logon and you will see "Autologon" pop up below it. Click on it!.

Then over on teh top right, tick the box that says "log on automatically at startup"
Type your user name into the white box
If you use a password to log on, you need to click on the "set password" button and put your password in twice.

Then click ok. Next time you restart your pc it will automatically log on!

Instructions if ya can't find the tweakui thing:

Go to start, search, files or folders.
Type in TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe and click search.
When you find it, double click on it and it will install itself and then you should be able to find it by going to start, programs, powertoys for windows xp, tweakui.
