Minn Kota Co Pilot ??

I'd like to gather some sentiments on the Co-Pilot system. I've been shopping around for a 24V 74lb thrust trolling motor for my new 19ft CC boat. We have several electric only lakes around with premium fishing that I won't be able to get onto until I have an electric TM. The boat will be used primarily in fresh water with an a few vacation trips around salt water each year and therefore am considering the Minn Kota Riptide series. Aside from the fact, I don't want pedals, buttons, switches, etc to be a safety hazard for my children, I really like the idea of being able to control the motor without having to be at the front of the boat all the time BUT one marine dealer where I have been looking indicates my expectations may be disappointing. He suggests these are more things to go wrong and knows of a few people that are sorry they made the investment. Now I'm not sure if he doesn't have much experience selling them, is assuming I can't afford it and afraid the price will scare me away, or indeed has a valid point that I should be giving consideration to.
Can any co pilot owners share their experiences and satisfaction?

helpful thoughts appreciated.

Kevin

PAkev
I have an AP-65 Minn Kota Autopilot, power drive. As far as the autopilot feature is concerned, I've had the circuit board replaced two times after it was determined defective (under warranty). The Co-Pilot/remote that I added after about 9 months is totally awesome in my opinion. Except for a loss in response caused by the batteries getting weak in the remote I haven't had any trouble with them at all. I have remote holders zip-tied to my fishing rods which is good for me. It's really great to be able to control your trolling motor from anywhere in the boat and especially if you get a fish on and need some help your fishing partner can easily manage the trolling motor while you're working with your fish. As with any man made device and especially because of the electronics, they're not perfect but.... I would really hate to go back to a foot/cable or hand operated trolling motor.
JD

PAkev,
The nice thing about the c0-pilot is that you can buy it later and add it on when you wish. I just bought a new power drive and I plan on adding the co-pilot later. I just didn't want to shell out that much money all at once. Makes me nervous.
-Joe

PAkev,

I have the 55AP with Copilot. I think the Copilot is the best thing since barbed hooks! I find it very easy to use and have come to value its vesatility. It allows me to control the boat from the stern in needed or pass control to my fishing buddy so he can use a 2nd remote to steer while I reel in a fish.

I use the wrist band to mount the remote and keep the foot pedal plugged in for foot use when desired.

I have had no problems with the unit in the year I've been using it. Obviously, it uses more battery power, but the AP feature makes it worth it.
