My fishing partner has a Minn Kota 565 trolling motor on his boat. It has quit working and when I try turning the prop it is very hard to turn and makes grinding noise. I suspect it is the brushes. How do I remove the prop (it has been on for years) and where is quickest and best place to purchase brushes. Is this something a "shade tree mechanic" can do? I checked all the electrical system and it works fine.

Re: Minn Kota 565

If the prop turns very hard its probably NOT the brushes and more than likely bearings. Water has probably made its way past the seal and corroded the bearing(s). It's a MinnKota -- parts need to come from MinnKota. If you did an on-online search for "MinnKota trolling motor parts" you might get lucky. But I would take it apart first to see if its even repairable. The prop is either held on with a nut or a cotter pin.
