HELLO, MY TROLLING MOTOR IS POPPING FUSES (25AMP) WHEN UNDER A LOAD (WEEDY AREAS, HIGH SPEED). ANY IDEAS? I THINK THE BOAT IS WIRED W/6GA. WIRE WHICH IS REQUIRED.THE FUSE HOLDER IS HOT EVERY TIME I GO TO CHANGE A FUSE SO SOMETHING IS WRONG. SHOULD I RE-WIRE THE BOAT? PLEASE LET ME KNOW ANY IDEAS YOU MAY HAVE. LAST SAT. I REPLACED 4 FUSES IN 5 HRS.

Re: MINN KOTA 55 AT BLOWING FUSES

Hi madmike, Are you sure a 25A fuse is what belongs in there? This is a 12 Volt motor right? If the motor is 24 Volts then a 25A fuse would be about right, but 12 Volt motors draw more amps. Without looking in the manual I would say a 50A fuse is closer to what you want. Don't change it til you find out for sure what the right size is, but 50A should be close. You said the fuse holder was hot. Is the wiring also hot? If it is, you may have other problems and I would for sure replace the wiring. Also check for corrosion at battery terminals. Hope this helps.

I have a Minnkota 54 lbs 12v and it uses a 50 amp fuse or circuit breaker. You can get the info from their website. www.minnkota.net

The fuse holder is hot because of the resistence caused by the underfused connection. The fuse cannot handle the load and it heats up, just as an undersized wire would do. Put the 50 amp fuse in and then see if it heats up. If the wires on either side about 6" away from the fuse are not hot, it's the fuse and I would not re-wire it... If it blows a 50 Amp, there are other problems that need to be addressed..

THANK-YOU ALL. GOING WITH A 50 AMP FUSE. I'LL RUN IT THRU THE GARBAGE THIS WEEKEND AND LET YOU ALL KNOW HOW IT WENT. I HOPE I DON'T FRY MY MOTOR. I THINK PART OF MY PROBLEM IS: IT LOOKS LIKE THE BOAT WAS ONCE WIRED FOR A 24 VOLT MOTOR. THE ONE I NOW HAVE IS 12 VOLT. TOO MANY WIRES FOR A SIMPLE MIND. (MAYBE TOO MANY BEERS) THANKS AGAIN TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP!
