I've got my 1992 Apha 1 out drive off (first time since I bought her last summer)and am replacing the impeller. There are what seem to be mineral deposits on the inside of the exhaust passages. Is this normal for a system this old? If its in the outdrive I assume it must be in the rest of the system (manifolds etc). She ran fine last year with no overheating issues. Is there anything I could (or should) do to scrape off what I can? I recall reading some post from guys saying that they have run something through the system to help reduce whats there and prolong the life of the risers and manifolds a bit. I'm already into too much money this spring so I'll like to avoid anymore (at least for now). Any advice on what and how is appreciated.

Re: mineral deposits

I run in a river to ocean. Its moored in fresh/brackish water. I bought the boat last year in NH where it had been used in fresh water since new. If you run chemicals through the muffs do you risk damage to impeller etc? Is there something they sell at West Marine or other supplier?

Re: mineral deposits

the best stuff i ever bought was the stuff that rental places that rent machinery, trash pumps and skidsteers. before you rent a trash pump for salt water they make you buy the stuff to clean and protect the housings from the harsh salt water. i forget the exact name of it but it lasts awhile. its like a teflon but its not. it seals pits and pourous alloys from the dangerous salty and corrosive enviroment. call your local rental place.as for getting the deposits out of the housings and block... they sell many things. call west marine for whats best in your area.. is it worm shell? that stuff sucks
