milk and rocker arm....

well, the fun with this boat never ends (87 bayliner 2.3l cobra outdrive). today i got out for a little test after cleaning out the exhaust manifold (which was full of rust). wouldnt start up, so i pulled the #1 plug to see if it was sparking and wham, water comes spewing out when i crank it! so, i pulled off the valve cover just now and it is full of water/oil, AND one of the rocker arms is not rocking anymore. it somehow came off! so, i guess i need to pull everything off to see if it is a cracked block or a blown head gasket? is it toast?

thanks as always..

some history:
Last weekend, the boat was running hot (200F-220F) at WOT, if i throtled back it would cool back to 170 or so and then i could run for a few minutes, etc. all the way back to the dock. I figured a clogged exhaust manifold could be causing some cooling problems.

Re: milk and rocker arm....

ok, so how much would it cost to get my head magnafluxed and maybe even rebuilt. lets says without having to replace any parts, maybe just resurfacing? My co owner is about to give up, but i am still treading water...

Its now time to figure out if it is worth it to save the boat, or to have a "BEAT A BAYLINER FOR A BUCK" day down at the boat ramp with a few sledge hammers... thanks

check the mating surface from the manifold to the riser. the engine maybe filling up with water from there.

you might have wiped the cam with water in the oil.

i agree with you about the bayliner thing. no matter what brand of drive, they always tear up when placed in a bayliner hull. what's up with that.

well, 9 out of 10 bolts came out of the head with almost no problem. broke a ratchet and smashed my knee when it did on the 10th one. soaked it in pb for the whole day, heated it and cooled twice, put the breaker bar on it and wham, broke the bolt head off! so at least now the head will come off right? no. that thing is stuck on there like white on rice. im going to try to put the spark plugs back on and crank it a couple of times to see if the piston compression will push the head up. any forseeable problems with this? i sprayed a bunch more pr on it before it got dark, so maybe that will loosen it up by morning.

well turns out it was a blown head gasket and a warped head. i am now ready to reassemble everything, but was wondering about resetting the timing. I put the distributor on the #1 position, and then the 1# piston at TDC, and the the overhead cam on the middle tick mark? does that sound right?

thanks

I am not familiar with the 2.3 engine, but this is pretty much standard with 4 strokes.

Be careful about the #1 at TDC. There are 2 TDC positions, 1 at top of compression (this is the correct position) and the other when it is at the exhaust stroke. Recognise the compression stroke by the lifters/cam keeping both valves in the closed position.
