Actually, if you run a ship (boat) right you pay attention to something called watertight integrity. The hatches are gasketed and sealed. If you keep them closed and dogged, you could expect that sort of outcome. If the skipper had the moxy to shut down before it went under, it's simply a matter of restarting when it right's itself on the other side. It looks like that's what he did. The engine was pretty wet, but still hot enough to catch when it cranked.
What you see here is the result of a real cool old salt at the con. Bet he loaded his britches, though.
