I have a middle 80's **not sure the year but will find out after work today** Force 50hp on a bayliner Capri 14 foot open bow. Max people is four.. the prop on the motor is just beat up something awful. I just picked this boat up from my brother in law. It runs well.. gets up on plain and seems to run WOT pretty well. Just need to do something about that prop. I have searched through lots of the past posts and have heard a few different sizes and pitch's for a prop.

What's your thoughts? Does any one have this size motor and if so what are you using? I am looking for joy riding, fishing, sking. Getting out of the hole is important however top end is important too.. perhaps something in the middle?

Thank you. :)

Check the number stamped in the metal between the blades. If your brother in law liked the performance, I would replace it with the same prop.

I have a 1994 50 hp Force on a 14ft Bayliner, with a closed deck. My prop is 13 1/2. It is fine for one or two people but lacks power to plane with 4 adults. It also has difficulty pulling an average sized adult out of the water skiing. I installed a tiny tach (see posts on this forum) and I now know my boat has difficulty reaching max rpm (5000-5500 for my motor) when it has more than one person in the boat. Pulling a child skiing or loaded with 4 adults I am running about 4300 rpm at WOT.

If I can locate one, I want to try a 12 1/2 pitch or maybe even an 11 1/2? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I hope this info helps you.

Very interesting and thank you for letting me know the area to check for the size. 293 12 1/2 is what is currently on the boat now. I am happy with it unsure of "real" speed when WOT due to having an old spedo hooked up. Also do not have a tach although since we have similar motors mine being just a little older perhaps i can see how to add it through your posts and others. The model on mine is 507X5A max operating between 4500-5500. With two adults it did get on plane fairly quickly. Truthfully it's kinda hard to tell.. this is the first boat i have ever owned and i have gotten so used to fishing with my dad's boat. 20 foot skeeter with a 200 yamaha on it. Tends to get out of the hole quickly :D

So where is a good place to get a tach and prop?

Thanks,

Search "tiny tach" in the forum or google for the info you need. I did last year and it was easy to do and I believe less work than installing a factory tach.

For a prop, depending how bad it is you can try to get it repaired. For a new or used one there is always e-bay and the odd marina still has them in stock. I haven't searched too hard yet but I think a new prop can be difficult to locate.

At least your boat will get better fuel economy than your dad's

These props come up frequently on the auctions. However, if you absolutely can not find what you want or need, the Michigan 10 3/8 diameter props for older Evinrude/Johnson 40 HP etc. are the same prop casting with a different hub. They also come up for auction frequently. If your old hub is in good condition it can be CAREFULLY pressed out and re-pressed into the OMC prop using some black RTV silicone as lubricant and glue. Or, if you get a good deal on the prop, a prop shop will re-hub it for around 35 bucks.

Lacking that, Go over to The Chrysler Crew and advertise for one. franzmarine@aol.com may have a nice used one for you.

:D I belive you are right on the fuel djs!! It came with a six gallon gas tank.. thought to myself hmm thats not enough but i am thinking it will be considering the motor size.

I think I will try the prop shop first and see if they can repair it. If not then i will go forward with an auction or follow Frank's advice and go speak with the other group.

Also thanks for the tach info i will go track that down as i can see it's crucial in fine turning or diagnosing issues down the road.

Thanks again
