Mid to Late 20 HP Mercury??

I have an older Mercury, serial # 3316276. Looks to be about a 17 inch shaft. Is there a way to tell the year? Is there a good place to buy a used extension shaft kit? If not used, where would be a good source for a new kit? Would a kit get me down to about 22 inches or so?
Is it a big job to add the extension kit? Would it be a good time to replace the impellar as the motor has set in the previous owner's house back East for several years and has not been used in awhile. It does pump water. Thanks ahead of time for helping out.

I'm thinking mid to late 70's. Should have read my post before I sent it off.

It was built in the same year that Don McLean had his biggest hit, 1972.

Thanks Dunaruna. Now I should be able to follow up on that shaft extension kit. Appreciate the help.

Boat motors are 15" short shaft. 20" long shaft. You are not measuring it correctly.
What is the dimension of your boat transom?

Don't have the boat with me, it is in storage, will be bringing it home this weekend. I've looked on the net and am following the directions on the Nissan website. Seem to be doing what they tell me.
Thanks for the response, didn't know anyone else was still looking at the post. I've got a 19 foot Fishmaster with a step down transom. Using the Merc as a kicker, but haven't had it long enough to put in on.
