Re: Mid 70's Mercury 1750 Outboard

Ahoy, Winger! Welcome to the board. This is the best place to get advice and opinion.

Six years, huh?

First, buy yourself a manual. Clymer publishes a good one.

Remove the spark plugs and squirt a bit of WD-40 in each cylinder. By hand, turn the flywheel through several turns or until it turns smoothly and with little effort.

Next, dismantle and clean the carbs, with special attention to jets and other small passages.

Put an overhaul kit in your fuel pump.

Replace the water pump impeller and the grease in the lower end.

If all of the above goes smoothly, check for spark by turning the engine over with the starter. If each plug fires blue, reinstall them.

Fresh 86 octane fuel, mixed 50:1 with TC-W3 rated 2 stroke oil. Clean tank, new hose and primer bulb. "Earmuffs" on water intakes. Water on. Start her up.

I trust our colleagues to point out anything I have overlooked.

Let us know how it goes.

Red sky at night...
JB :)

Great job JB !!! One more thing, these bad boys are hard to start. Don't get discouraged. BE SURE MOTOR IS VERTICAL, then squeeze bulb until you get gas leaking from carbs (or it gets very hard then 2 more squeezes), push choke switch then crank it holding choke. As I said they are hard to start, but they sound very nice when you get there

Of course beware to not crank for a long time without letting starter cool off.

Val

RULE #1 START WITH A COMPRESSION TEST if this motor has a bad cyl or 2 it won't be worth spending time or money on,also the merc manuals are superior, you do get what you pay for here ,you will have to wait 10days or so to get merc manual whenordered from merc dlr

Howdy, JohnKC. Your suggestion would be correct if the engine had been run recently, and even better if it could be run up to operating temp first. This engine hasn't even been turned over in years.

Until it has been run a compression test would be worth little. Afterward it would be the next thing to do.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

You know maybe you guys need to get together and have a beer or somthing and talk about lines of attack all I needed was a method of attack for getting this old motor running or finding out if it was even viable, I was an engine machanic for a few years so I am not
completely with out experience, car engines not boat, thats way I was asking for input in the first place.
Maybe I need to buy you guys the beer (hehe)
Anyways thanks for the info so far
You guys have a great day
Mike

Re: Mid 70's Mercury 1750 Outboard

Well as I get this project going I will be posting some before and afters, the problem that I am having is getting it out of the mud from behind my barn, I have survailed some of the work that will have to be done maybe a new deck looks like one of the stringers is rotted, and all the interior is shot,It will be a lot of work but I belive it will be worth it in the long run, It will be a month or so be for it dry's out enough to pull it out (Trailer is sunk to axle's)
What was I thinking, most think I crazy, Im thinking Hey beats spending 18,000 on a new one, hehehe
