I have a 60 hp mariner (approx 1994 I think), 3 cylinder, that runs great once it is cranked. It seems to flood everytime I try to crank it. I am mixing the wal-mart brand oil with regular gasoline in the 50:1 ratio. I can shoot a dab of starting fluid in the intake and it will fire right up but sometimes will smoke quite a bit for the first few seconds. I have only had the boat for a month or so. It seems to run very smooth and idle well once I get it started and the engine "cleared" of the flooded conditon. Thanks for any and all suggestions!!

Welcome to iboats :)

Do not squirt starting fluid into your carbs, if and when you do have to, try squirting some premixed gas instead.
Are you fully priming the bulb and using the choke prior to starting?
And what is the condition of the sparkplugs?

YES, BULB TIGHT, USING CHOKE, CAN HEAR "CLICK". APPEARS TO BE FLOODING AND THE COMBUSITBLE STARTING FLUID....ONLY A SMALL AMOUT SPRAY AT THE OPENING OF THE BREATHER, GIVES IT THE SPARK TO GET GOING. USUALLY WILL DO OK FOR THE REST OF THE DAY, AND SOMETIMES EVEN THE NEXT DAY.

are you using the choke properly? turn key on, push in on choke primer for about 5-7 seconds, release, lift fast idle lever on controls, then crank, dont hold choke in when cranking. give that a try. thats how my system works.hope this helps.make sure your bulb is pumped up hard. make sure vent is open on fuel tank.

Thanks....I will give that a try. I was under the impression you were supposed to hold it pushed in while cranking and that has not been sucessful at all!!
