Seems like something weird is going on here. This is in Win XP When I either click on a .doc file or just click on the icon to open Word, this is what happens. First a normal logo is displayed denoting Microsoft Office Word 2007. The logo goes away and another box opens with the statement "please wait while setup prepares necessary files". Then inside that same box a graph bar appears and begins to load with the statement 'configuring MS Home and Student 2007'. When it is done the box goes away and Word opens up either with a blank sheet or the document that I had clicked on.

This all takes a couple of minutes and does not seem normal.

Any ideas?

Boom, I believe I saw some similar things years ago and corrected by re-installing Office. It's always been a quirky program in my experience anyway, probably due to some of the steps MS takes to deny piracy. I wouldn't put it past them to have something in your system reporting to them each time you open the program.

Just out of curiosity, I suggest you try it once with your internet connection disabled.

yeah mine was doing that a few years back when I was using XP. Never figured it out as it was on personal laptop which I didn't use much. I always figured it was an XP issue.

Interesting! I opened Word in Safe Mode without networking. It started to act the same way, ie, Word 2007 logo, then the Preparing MS OFFICE box. But then instead of moving on to the Configuring Office bar, a message popped up saying that this function was no longer working. I clicked on the OK button, the notice box went away and a new blank Word page opened up. Go figure what it was trying to do.

I think I will uninstall Student Word 2007 and try reinstalling it.

Go to Control Panel-->Programs and see if there is an option to repair the installation.

Do you mean 'add or remove programs' in control panel? I don't see a plain Program listing.

Yeah, that's it. My XP-speak is a little rusty.
