Michigan Wheel (Vortex) vs Turning Point (Hustler)

Both the Michigan Wheel Vortex and Turning Point Hustler aluminum props use a hub system to keep prop prices down. I have trashed a few props in my time (but not lately, gone 3 years on the last one!), so the hub systems appeal to me. Also, aluminum is just fine, as I don't need the higher performance of stainless, and the possible gear case damage that can accompany a stainless prop strike.

Looking for some opinions on which is the better performing prop, Vortex or Hustler.

The prop will be used on a 90 hp 2003 Johnson that will be repowering my Bayliner. The 85 hp Force currently on the boat has a 13.5 x 19 prop, but Vortex prop selector suggests a 12.75 x 21 and Hustler suggests a 13.25 x 19 or 13.25 x 17. I think I'll start with a 19 pitch to start.

Hustler has good advertising, and claims to perform better than most OEM props, with lots of testimonials and test results to back up those claims. I don't see that from Vortex.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome!

Thanks

Mark

I too like the new hub systems. I have 3 props (2 I use) and like that i can change them and only need to buy one hub.

As for the props, I say go with the Michigan Wheel.
My only reason is, they are based in Grand Rapids and we need the money..:(

Tail_Gunner, that is a good review of the Solas. The Hustler has lots of praise on this forum too. The Solas Amita3 doesn't seem to be a hub kit prop, but another model they make is. I see that iboats doesn't carry it. Not sure if both of those Solas props are the same or not.

Hadn't given a 4 blade much thought. Does a 4 blade give better fuel economy over a 3 blade?

Yes ultimatley it does. The main advantages to a 4 is better holeshot...lower planing speed....More midrange punch and a smoother overall feel to the boat..These are characteristics....of a 4 blade...It will be more responsive in all areas aside from a full on wot run

85% of normal boating occurs just on plane or 3/4 wot...The 4 blade will outperform a 3blade all things being equal..Now at WOT yes the 3blade will outrun a 4 blade the fourth starts to drag at about 35mph or 3/4 throttle

MPG and boats really dont fly well..IT takes a certain amount of power for a boat to overcome the pressure wave which is gas consuming...A 4 blade has more blade area and more lift pushing the stern quicker and rides higher creating less drag and better fuel econ but nothing thats really that great.

Read around very few people are not happy with there 4 blades..;)
