Michigan - buying never registered boat trailer

I am in the process of buying a never-before registered boat trailer. I looked for the serial number/VIN plate on the vehicle and found it but it was blank. The previous owner had never registered the trailer. Has anyone ever dealt with this sort of thing in Michigan? (In Michigan, the trailer is not titled.)

Thanks,
Terry

Yes as a matter of fact. Take it to the nearest certified weigh scale, you can find one at most scrap yards, truck stops etc ( they charge a small fee $5-10). Once you get the weigh slip for the trailer, take it and the bill of sale to the secretary of state and register it as a "Homemade trailer". They will give you your plate, registration and you are good to go. I have done several utility trailers, and a boat trailer. The tricky part is finding a place to put the boat if you have one on it already so that doesn't get figured into the weight. ( you will pay significantly more as I'm sure you know.) The $75 permanent plate is good for 2500 lbs, after that it goes up.

Similar here in Ontario, Canada. But we're allowed to guess at the weight of the trailer :) You just tell em it weighs X pounds and is Y color and they'll register it as home made for $35 :)
