Meteorologists and Mathematics Wow! Those are two words that do NOT go together.

Last night the Meteorologist on TV, the radio and even the NOAA prediction was for a light snow with accumulation of 1-2 inches. I just plowed my driveway with an accumulation of 8"

Either Math is not a requirement for the job or they are just good old math failures!

Okay, I realize the amount of snow is not their fault by why bother to even guess!

If they guess, they get paid.

They really don't predict, Bob. They merely state probabilities.

Compared to when we were boys they (the probabilities) are amazingly accurate.

I grew up on Lake Michigan and the forecasts have come a long way from what I grew up with. It was almost like the forecast should have been followed by,
"Well, that's my guess, but the lake may make a different decision."

Would you feel better, if they had predicted 8 inches and you got only 2 ? ;)

Local forecasts are based on gathered weather data, outwards to a thousand miles or more away. Things do change.

As a truck driver, I follow weather constantly. It is amazingly accurate, especially high/low temps, nearly all of the time.

Someday it will be perfect.

I used to laugh at the weathermen in the UK... I reckon if they just said "it will rain continuously" they'd have been 70% correct - which is probably 10-15% better than their actual correct predictions percentage.

Yeah, I was born there and went back a few years ago. That's a pretty safe forecast.

I'd love to be a weather man. Best job in the world. You can be wrong 90% of the time, and not get fired!

Re: Meteorologists and Mathematics

One of our local veteran forecasters was telling a story of when he first came to West Michigan, over 20 years ago. He studied all the information, no storms present. His forecast was cold, clear that night and sunny the next day. He woke up the next morning and there was over a foot of snow. He said he was very embarassed, and over 100 people had called and complained about his forecast. He had never heard of Lake Effect Snow. They didn't teach him about it in school.

What other job can you do and get paid 300k per year on most metro markets, and be wrong 50% of the time and not get fired. Heck I know fisherman who can predict weather better than most of them.
