Have a 8x10 metal shed I got from Sears long ago.
Couple years ago, I used a roller and did the whole thing with oil-based rustoleum, and it looked fine - until this winter...
Roof caved in and when I pushed it back, cracks where it folded, and worse, the rustoleum is peeling off in sheets!

There was quite a snow load this winter, and temps got to -10 F, maybe lower.

I've thought of an aluminized roof coating intended for trailers, and thought of trying to cover with vinyl siding, but I don't think slope is steep enough...
Any other Ideas???

I would recommend selling it for scrap and building another. Many of the metal buildings last for a good while but once they start going they are in most cases, goners. Just helped put one of the sears models together for a buddy. They a lighter now then when you got yours, probably will ot last as long

Re: Metal shed repair

I was hoping to avoid expense and hassle of tearing existing down and fun of putting up a new one.

Wish I had a better option, only other thing would be to build another roof over it, but then your more then half way there. Sorry I couldn't be of more help in the idea department

Re: Metal shed repair

you could repair the cracks with an epoxy or even caulk.......... I imagine the paint is peeling off in sheets cause the metal was either not treated/prepped properly, or the original coating was not compatable with oil based paint.

Re: Metal shed repair

repair the cracks with sheet metal, rivets (or sheet metal screws) and caulking. Those metal sheds are a real PITA to assemble with all the screws.

I would make wood braces for the roof maybe inside a bunch of 2x3's to stay cheap........ then cover the existing roof with metal roofing or even corrugated fiberglass panels from home depot/lowes. The metal roofing sheets come painted ;) Nail then to the 2x3's on the inside.

I would fix it on the cheap.

1x4 slats/rafters layed from peak to wall. 1/4" ply fixed over slats. Roll roofing glued/(Henry tubes) to the ply.

It is reparable, but the next snow will put him right back here again sooner or later. I would be looking at the pitch you have, and increasing that with whatever new roof you decide on. The roof didn't fail because of paint, it failed because the snow weighed so much I bet. If I owned it, it would be scrapped, and I'd build one twice as big, but that's just me. New roof is in order at a minimum.

Re: Metal shed repair

Scrap the metal shed for whatever you can get for scrap metal and then get some studs and T-111 type siding and make a nice shed that will not only hold up under the snow weight but also give a much nicer appearance to the yard. Standard building practices with wood will make a solid long lasting shed...and you will have the satisfaction of building it yourself too... I love building things like that. Easy, fun and well worth the material costs and effort. :joyous:

I live in a VERY high snow load area. The 2X3's inside to support the roof and provide a nailing surface will be fine. The corrugated metal usually comes painted and will also shed snow. It will be a lightweight repair.

Re skin the roof, the profile of the tin/aluminum that sears used for many years can be made at most roof suppliers.
And they can most likely match the colour.
As well if you get the roofs profile ridges closer and triangular shaped they will hold a snow load better than a flatter and a wider ridge profile.
You may also might think about strapping the roof to the outside walls for more support.

Re: Metal shed repair

I built my own shed, it is an 8 x 12, wood shed, with a barn roof profile, plywood floor and T-111 siding, with a 5 foot swing out door, I have about $200 in material invested and was able to build it in a weekend, it has 2x4 studs, and a 2x6 roof, it has held up to as much as 9 feet of snow on it with no problems, I was just able to get into it a couple of days ago, due to the snow finally melting off enough, no signs of leaking at all, it has a metal roof on it. I priced one that is similar and what I used for plans that I drew up after taking pictures of the commercial one, and the local company wanted $1500 for it.

Well, wife weighed in, and I'll be getting a replacement shed identical to original - under $300, and I found a recycling place that'll take the old one and give me a few bucks.
I wanted to bolster inside with some wood framing, but couldn't decide on what to do about roof - then wife spoke up - old one lasted approx 20 years, so this does make sense....

Sorry man I just knew this might happen, bummer :( I could see a 4 car, 3 level, multiplex of some sort. Need answers to those questions that might come up during a ciphering session with other guys
