I bought a 1988 Mako 17 with a 1988 Johnson 120 past summer. My first boat. Soon after I noticed metal shavings on the magnetic plug of lower unit. A local Johnson service rebuilt the lower unit. After 4-5 Hrs of boating I did check the filler plug and find, fine metal fuzz stuck to it. Could that be normal after rebuilding ? Thak You for this forum! I think I am hooked.

Yes, Oarfish, a SMALL amount of fine metal particles is normal, particularly after breaking in/wearing in new parts.

No worries.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Here's your second opinion..... Yes this is normal. The only reason I offer the second opinion is because I see this is your first post and thought you'd feel better with several opinions. ;)

How 'bout a third opinion. You'll get some shavings form the clutch. That's why it's good practice not to ease the engine into gear. Engage with authority.

c/6

hooty

Yes the "fuzz" is normal. If you use synthetic lube even the "fuzz" will almost be gone.

Good luck!
